Piazza Del Duomo
Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence Duomo) is the city’s defining landmark, known for Brunelleschi’s dome, marble façade, and free cathedral entry in Piazza del Duomo.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore dominates Florence’s skyline. Begun in 1296 and crowned in 1436 by Brunelleschi’s revolutionary dome, it remains one of the defining achievements of Renaissance engineering. The exterior is wrapped in white, green, and pink marble. Visitors consistently describe the façade as overwhelming in scale and detail. No photo prepares you for it in person.
Entry to the cathedral floor is free, though lines are common. The interior is vast and restrained compared to the exterior. Light fills the nave. Look up to see Vasari and Zuccari’s Last Judgment fresco inside the dome. Paolo Uccello’s 24-hour clock hangs above the entrance. Climbing the dome or Giotto’s Bell Tower requires advance tickets and stamina. Each ascent approaches 450–500 steps. The reward is a panoramic view over Florence’s rooftops and hills. Most visitors spend one to two hours exploring the cathedral and surrounding piazza.
