Everything you need to know about booking, living abroad, and settling into your new home, answered in one place.
What is the best website for finding student housing abroad?
Student Housing Abroad is built specifically for students arranging accommodation for a semester or year overseas: every listing is remotely reviewed and verified, prices and fees are shown up front, and our team helps with booking and move-in. That combination (verified listings, transparent pricing, and dedicated support for international students) is what makes us the best website for finding student housing abroad for many students comparing their options.
Is my room guaranteed once I pay the booking fee?
Paying the booking fee sends your booking request to the landlord. While the landlord reviews it, the room is held for you and no one else can book it through Student Housing Abroad for your dates.
Your room is guaranteed for your dates once the landlord approves your booking. If the landlord declines or cannot provide the room, you can choose another unit at no extra cost, or we will refund your booking fee in full.
How does the booking process work?
Once you find a property you're interested in, upload:
• Two forms of identification (e.g., passport, student ID)
Next, review and complete all Booking Reminders (see below), then click "Secure Your Spot, Book Now!" to submit your booking. Your housing will only be confirmed once all documentation is complete and your payment has been processed.
Every unit listed on our platform is verified through our Unit Selection Process, which ensures full transparency and accurate details in every listing.
Booking Reminders (Required Before Booking):
1. I've been accepted by both my home and abroad university.
2. I've applied for my visa and will receive it before departure.
3. My passport is valid through the entire abroad term.
4. I understand my housing is only confirmed once all required documents and payments are completed.
5. I know my program start and end dates.
6. I've completed required health forms or vaccinations (if required by the destination country).
7. I understand I am responsible for having health and travel insurance during my stay abroad.
8. I understand refunds are only possible in extenuating circumstances (e.g., pandemic, war, etc.).
9. I have read, understood, and agree to sign the Placement Agreement electronically.
Do I need a guarantor or co-signer?
No. Proof of funds is not required to book.
Can I book a room with a friend?
Yes. You can invite friends to listings using our
Roommate Finder, found in your Student Account under the Roommate Preferences tab. If you don't already have a roommate, you can opt-in to be matched with another student based on your preferences.
What is included in my room or apartment?
Furnishings and amenities vary by listing, and listings in different cities differ, so check the Features section on each

• Some have air conditioning and many do not. Many list a fan or heating.
• Bedding and towels are usually not provided. A few listings include bed sheets.
• In most shared apartments utilities are not included in the monthly rent. In our residences they are included.
What do utilities cost?
In most shared apartments utilities are not included in the monthly rent, and they average about €10 to €50 per month. In our residences utilities are included. The listing tells you which applies.
Is there laundry, and is there a dryer?
Most rooms in shared apartments have a washing machine in the apartment, and our residences have a laundry room. Few listings have a dryer, so most students air dry. The listing shows exactly what is there.
Do the rooms have air conditioning?
Some do and many do not. Each listing shows under Features whether it has air conditioning, a fan or heating, so please check the listing before you book.
How do I know this unit is in a good area?
Each listing includes a "Why Choose This Unit?" section that highlights:
• Walkability and convenience
• Distance to nearby universities
• Access to local transit and grocery stores
• Student-friendly atmosphere
You'll also find:
• Amenities
• Nearby Universities
• Virtual Tour (if available)
• Lease Agreement
• Map Location
Who meets me at check-in?
Someone from the landlord's team will meet you upon arrival, or you will receive instructions for key pickup or lockbox access. All check-in procedures are clearly communicated before your move-in date.
Can I get a refund if my study plans change?
Refunds are only available in the case of extenuating circumstances, such as a pandemic, war, or other emergency. We send multiple reminders and confirmations before any booking is finalized, and once the booking fee is paid, your spot is reserved with the landlord and cannot be reallocated.
