Piazza San Giovanni
Baptistery of St. John in Florence is one of the city’s oldest monuments, known for its golden mosaic ceiling, marble façade, and Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise.
The Baptistery of St. John stands directly across from Florence Cathedral and predates it by centuries. Consecrated in 1059, the octagonal structure is one of Florence’s oldest surviving buildings. Its exterior is wrapped in white Carrara and green Prato marble arranged in geometric Romanesque patterns. Many visitors note that even beside the Duomo, the baptistery holds its own presence.
Inside, the highlight is the vast golden mosaic ceiling. Concentric biblical scenes surround a commanding image of Christ. Even during restoration periods, the restored sections remain striking. The inlaid marble floor and octagonal layout reflect early Christian and Roman influence. Outside, the bronze doors draw attention, especially Ghiberti’s “Gates of Paradise.” Most visits last 15–30 minutes. Tickets are included with Brunelleschi, Giotto, or Ghiberti passes.
