Check with your program first

Many programs in Madrid place students in their own apartments, residences or host families, and some require it. Ask your program whether you may live independently before you pay for anything, and ask whether it needs your address by a set date.

If your program leaves housing to you, or you are enrolled directly at a university, study abroad housing Madrid listings like these are one place to start.

What a room in a shared flat includes

You rent one bedroom and share the kitchen and living areas. Almost all of the rooms are listed as furnished, with a wardrobe, a desk, wifi and access to a kitchen.

Flats are often large. Those that state a capacity usually hold between four and twelve people, so read that number on the listing before you choose. About seven in ten rooms list a cleaning service, and more than half are in buildings with an elevator.

Dates for a fall or spring semester

Availability is the part to check first, because a room is only useful if it is free when your semester starts. When we checked in November 2026, 238 of the rooms showed a free date by the end of January and 463 by the end of February.

Many more become free in June and July, ahead of the fall semester, so students arriving in September have more choice than students arriving in January.

Rooms or a student residence

A shared flat costs less than a residence because you share more of the space. We also list 217 residence units in Madrid, most of them on Paseo de la Florida near Príncipe Pío, from €1,045 a month.

A residence suits you if you want services on site. A flat suits you if you would rather live in an ordinary building in the city and spend less.

Where the rooms are

Rooms are spread across the city, including central streets around Puerta del Sol and Calle Preciados, Chamberí, Retiro and Puente de Vallecas. Further out, the commute is longer, so weigh it against the rent.

Compare the address with your classes before you book. If you know your campus, our pages for study abroad students near Saint Louis University, IE University, Complutense and Suffolk University show what is close to each one.
